CLCW International Film: Jellyfish: February 14

This month, the Changing Lives, Changing World International Film series continues with "Jellyfish", an Israeli/French film of three women in Tel Aviv and the different bonds and relationships they nurture in their lives, whether it is looking after an orphaned child, coping with a new spouse on a bad honeymoon, or financially supporting a child from a distance.

This film will be shown in Hebrew with English subtitles.

It's time for another Adults' Winter Reading Program! Just as in previous years, sign-up is at the Two Harbors Public Library. Any interested adult is welcome to participate. Audiobooks and eBooks count toward the program, so if you have a new Kindle or Nook, go ahead and use it! If you listen to books in the car, don't forget to count those too! Every book 'read' counts towards one entry into the prize drawing!

There will be two prize drawings this year. The early bird drawing will be held February 6th, for everyone who signed up at the very start of the program - the prizes are two calendars. The second drawing is based on all the drawing slip entries turned in throughout the course of the program. Small prizes include tote bags and mugs. The grand prize this year is a $20 gift certificate donated by Louise's Place.

The program will formally end the evening of Wednesday, March 14th, at 6:30 PM, with a Hot Cocoa Party and book sharing! We look forward to seeing you all here!

Children's Winter Reading Program: Curl Into a Good Book: February 1 - March 15

It's time for the Children's Winter Reading Program!!! As in previous years, sign-up will take place at the Two Harbors Public Library. What is different is how kids earn drawing entries. In previous years, the deal was that, for every five books, a child earned a drawing entry. However, this was unfair to older kids, who would take days to read Harry Potter while younger kids could put in 10 picture books in an afternoon. This year, therefore, children will earn credit for time spent reading each day! We will hand out a game board, and for every day a child reads at least 20 minutes, one box can be marked off. For every five days that a child reads at least 20 minutes (totaling a minimum of 100 minutes), that child will earn one drawing slip and a prize! The first child to complete 40 days of reading (totaling a minimum of 800 minutes) and submit the game board to a staff member will win a stuffed polar bear!

As in previous programs, there are four big prizes that children can try to win:

- Perplexus Original Maze Game
- IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit
- 20 Questions Harry Potter game

Poetry Workshop: February 13

Writing Poetry: Memory is a rich source of material for all poets and writers. It is the substance of memoir but also a major part of fiction and poetry. What we notice, what images resonate, what our mind fastens upon -- what fascinates -- changes over time. At this workshop, designed for new or experienced writers, we will experiment and play with a few guided writing exercises that will help you reach into your own sources of memory, music and myth. This year for the Teen Winter Reading Program, we're going to try a little something new. Teens, grades 7-12, can sign-up for the program at either the Two Harbors Public Library OR the Two Harbors High School Library!!! For every book you read or listen to (yes, audiobooks count), you earn one entry into the prize drawing. You also earn one free entry into the prize drawing by attending any Two Harbors Public Library event, whether it is a poetry workshop (February 13th, 6:30PM), Author talk (February 23rd, 6:30PM,) Family Film (February 24th, 1:30PM), or anything else on the library's schedule.

Monday Evening Book Group: February 6

It is the inaugural meeting for the Monday Evening Book Club! And what is the first book to be discussed? Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre!!!

Jane is an intelligent and kind orphan in an often cruel and indifferent world. Her dedication to advancing herself in society leads her to work as a governess for a mysterious man, Mr. Rochester. As soon as she thinks she might be able to find happiness and a place to belong, however, fate deals yet another harsh blow.

Read this classic tale of an orphan struggling to get by in the 19th century, and come discuss it at the library! Coffee will be served starting at 6:00 PM, and the formal discussion begins at 6:30 PM. Copies of the book are available at the library front desk.

Teen Anime/Manga Club: January 21

It's the first ever meeting of the Two Harbors Public Library Anime/Manga Club! Designed for teens, we are dedicated to appreciating Japanese animations, Japanese graphic novels, and anything else Japanese that we come across! (Although, I'm certainly not going to leave out other Asian cultures - if you are a manhwa fan, you are certainly welcome too!)

This first event will also help shape the future of the club, as attendees' input will be taken into account when planning all future events. If you have Japanese anime or manga you'd like to bring and discuss, that is certainly welcome as well!

Book Group: January 19

For January's meeting, the Two Harbors Public Library Book Group will read and discuss Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," a literary classic originally published in 1902.

Conrad was Polish, living under Russian rule, when he decided to apprentice to a seafarer. Early in his career he became involved in smuggling and gunrunning in Spain, and accrued huge debts in France. Trying to get out of this mess, he joined a British crew in 1878, learned English at the age of 21, and in 1890 began his own journey up the Congo River. It was his near disastrous trip up the Congo which likely led to his writing "Heart of Darkness" about the same subject, and his writings in English that would ultimately make him famous.

Hence, while reading this book, it might be worthwhile to look out for the portions that seem to be more autobiographical than fictional. The intertwining of Conrad's own experiences with those of the character Marlow should make for some very interesting discussion.

(Conrad's biographical information was taken from the book jacket of the Robert Bentley, 1902 edition of the book "Heart of Darkness.")

Changing Lives, Changing World: Travellers & Magicians: January 10

This January, the Changing Lives, Changing World International Film Series continues with "Travellers & Magicians," a film from Bhutan and written and directed by Khyentse Norbu, a Buddhist Lama.

This film follows the story of Dondup, a Bhutan government official who wishes to travel to America, his vision of Shangri-La. However, after missing a bus he ends of hitchhiking with an eclectic group of travellers and in the process finds love and a new respect for life in his own country.

The film will be shown in Dzonghka with English subtitles. A short discussion will follow the film.

Book Group: Once Upon a Town: December 15

This December, the Two Harbors Public Library Book Group will be meeting at Superior Shores for lunch and to discuss "Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen" by Bob Greene.

According to a Publisher's Weekly:
"Chicago Tribune columnist Greene (Duty) provides a moving, detailed remembrance of North Platte, Neb., and its residents' selfless contribution to the war effort during WWII. The town, located in the middle of the middle of the country, was situated on the rail line to western military bases. Ignited by a letter printed in a local newspaper, the town's residents organized a canteen for soldiers headed for the front lines, bringing food, cigarettes and magazines. Greene interviews locals, war veterans and former residents, offering a genuine but unsentimental glimpse of Americana. LaVon Fairley Kemper remembers one volunteer who learned that her son had been killed in combat, yet said, I can't help my son, but I can help someone else's son. For the soldiers, Greene writes, the canteen and the townspeople's welcome was indicative of the nation's sacrifice, a point driven home in several memorable anecdotes. The young soldiers saw the brief stop in North Platte as one last chance to be carefree, an opportunity to jitterbug and flirt with the fresh-faced teenaged girls for a safe, fleeting moment. This month's movie is "Roads To Koktebel," a Russian film about a widowed aerodynamics engineer who loses his job, and he and his son set off across Russia for Koktebel, a town on the Black Sea where they have family. Along the way, both discover that they have very different dreams, and maybe koktebel won't turn out to be the goal they had once imagined.

Christmas Cookies for TEENS!!!: December 10

Teens - this program is just for you!

The library is hosting a Christmas Cookies program - as in, cookies, frosting, and sprinkles will be provided, you just need to decorate and eat! (or simply eat, if you don't like the decorating part)

There will also be craft supplies provided for anyone interested in cutting out snowflakes, either to bring home or to hang up at the library, and Christmas Cards!

You don't need a library card; in fact, you don't need to have ever stepped foot in the library before. Neither do we require advance sign-up (although the more people who mention they will attend, either on Facebook or to a librarian, the more cookies will be provided).

So grab your friends, bring a bottle of water or a can of pop, and stop by the library for a FREE TREAT!

(The only caveat - all food and beverages must remain in the meeting room or outside. Sorry!)

Book Group: Giants in the Earth: November 17

This month the Two Harbors Public Library Book Group will be reading "Giants in the Earth" by O.E. Rolvaag. This is book one of the "Saga of the Prairie," a trilogy, and was originally written in Norwegian. According to the book jacket of the 1929 edition:

"Through this heroic tale of Norwegian settlers in the plains of South Dakota there runs a double conflict, the first between man and earth, the second between man and wife. In the first struggle Per Hansa gloried: he had come for this, to wrest fruit from the earth, to found a home on the soil. The second took the heart out of him. Because of his deep love for his wife, Beret's hatred of the new hard life and her longing after the remembered comforts of Norway were a sore trial to Per Hansa. He persevered, hoping that she would come to feel as he did, but she could not change. Religion, her chief comfort, became gradually an obsession and induced at last the tragic scene with which the story closes."

This is a very serious and touching story, so perhaps we will provide kleenex on discussion day, just in case. Regardless, we hope to see you all here, and hope you enjoy the novel!

Yes, he is actually bringing his own actor, so you know this Author Talk is not one to be missed!

The order of the day is as follows - as participants arrive with their antiques, they will receive a number, and this number decides the order that the antiques will be appraised. Only one antique will be appraised at a time, and once all the numbers have been run through, we will start over again at the first number, and continue in this way until either all the antiques have been appraised or the two hours set aside for the program are over.

Just a caveat - neither the library nor Lou Campbell are responsible for any antiques brought in.

The book that is being highlighted is "Migrations: Poetry and Prose for Life's Transitions," an anthology of poetry submitted by local authors, edited by Sheila Packa, the Poet Laureate of Duluth, and published through a grant. Some local poets you might recognize are Micky McGilligan, Shelley Getten, and Diane Friebe. So come check out their new book, and hear the poems read by the poets themselves!

The library’s Changing Lives, Changing World cultural film series has been popular enough to continue this fall! We will be kicking off the season with "Departures," a Japanese film about Diago, a young man who has failed to make a living as a cellist and in desperation takes a dubious new job preparing bodies for burial, a profession he hides from his family out of embarrassment. However, after working with the dead, and then being forced to face the death of someone close to him, he finds himself rethinking many things in his own life, and gaining respect for his new profession.

The style of a meeting generally involves members taking turns reading aloud poems they have selected, and occasional discussion. Ellen Baker, a Minnesota author who has previously worked as a living history interpreter and a curator of a WWII museum, is the author of two books: "Keeping the House" and "I Gave My Heart To Know This." The first book has received high reviews from booksellers such as Amazon, and the second book is being released August 2, 2011 - too new for popular reviews yet!

Baker also has a great sense of humor, as she states that in the process of writing these books, she has learned to weld a ship, mine for copper, and butcher a chicken. Maybe keep this in mind for when she opens the floor to questions. ;)

This month, the Two Harbors Public Library Book Group will be moving into slightly darker, more Gothic territory, as they read "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield.

"The Thirteenth Tale" is a fictional story involving Vida Winter, a famous author, and her biographer, Margaret Lea. Vida became famous publishing twelve imaginary life histories for herself, but now at the end of her life, wishes to finally share the truth - a story too hard to tell on her own. Thus, she hires Margaret, a biographer, to write the story; only, as often happens, Margaret has a dark past of her own to hide. And just to keep things interesting, there will also be a ghost, a governess, and a topiary garden.

Native American "Who Am I?" Sculptural Story Totems

A totem pole reads like a story. Traditionally carved by Native Americans, totems provided a record of their lives. While learning about traditional materials and symbols, kids will use clay to sculpt their own three-dimensional images to describe their own interests and lives. Completed sculptures can be taken home to treasure!

Larry Zimmerman, a trombonist in the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, will take you on a time-traveling trip into the past of brass instruments. Hear and see a shofar, conch, digeridoo and other fascinating instruments while exploring the history of brass from the earliest ancestors to the modern trombone. Using an extensive collection of mutes, Larry demonstrates many colorful sounds, which give the trombone a variety of voices and personalities. You'll never look at the trombone in the same way again!

This program is designed for people of all ages.

Margi Preus, author of several books including "The Peace Bell," "The Legend of the Lady Slipper," and "Celebritrees," will be speaking about her latest book, "Heart of a Samurai," which won a 2011 Newbery Honor Award.

Preus teaches children's literature at the College of St. Scholastica and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Her work has taken her to conferences, school-visits, and book-signings in such far-flung places as Japan and Norway, as well as across the US. In fact, shortly after her talk at the Two Harbors Public Library, she will be heading out to New Orleans for the formal Newbery Awards Ceremony.

African Drums Performance: June 17

We are hosting an exciting new program at the library - an African drum group will be performing! The Titambe West African Drum Ensemble will perform African dancing on African drums in cultural costume! The theme of the event is "Mi na mi fe" which translates to "Children let's play."

They will teach specific dances (including rhythms and live music), dancing and drumming techniques, related dress and cultural protocols of West Africa, and the interrelationship of drum rhythms and dance.

The Postmistress is the memorable story of three women during WWII whose lives are uniquely intertwined - Emma Trask, a young newlywed whose husband is a doctor stationed in England, Iris James, a middle-aged postmistress, and Frankie Bard, a war-correspondent covering England and Europe. The actions of the three, especially of the postmistress who hides a letter from Trask's husband, will question the reality and perception of truth in wartime.

2011 SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Kids preschool to 6th grade are invited to join the Two Harbors Public Library's summer reading program! Starting June 3, stop by the library to sign up and get your welcome packet. For every 5 books read during the program, kids get a prize and are entered in the drawings to be held August 11. Throughout the summer there will be crafts, activities, and entertainers. In addition to the regular prizes, there will also be 4 grand prizes: Harry Potter Lego Game, Friendship Bracelets Kit, Qwirkle Game, and a Mind Blowing Science Kit.

There will also be movies held at the library throughout the summer. And to wrap up our program, on Thursday, August 11th at 2 p.m. the library will be having the drawing for grand prizes, followed by a movie and snacks.

Stop by today and sign-up! Kids receive a welcome packet consisting of a rules sheet, booklog, bookmark, tattoo, stickers, pencil and activity packet.

Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer prevents the "summer reading loss" or "summer slide". Summer reading loss is cumulative, meaning that children don't "catch-up" in the fall, because other children are moving ahead with with their skills. By 6th grade, children who experience summer reading loss can be 2 years behind their classmates. Help your children avoid the "summer slide". Enroll them in the library's summer reading program!

Watercolor Presentation: June 6

Duane Barnhart, a professional watercolorist, will be conducting a watercolor presentation at the Two Harbors Public Library this June! Barnhart's works have appeared in both regional and national magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post, MPLS St. Paul Magazine, Cabin Life Magazine, and the Lake Country Journal.

Come hear him speak about his art and see him demonstrate his technique live! This program is primarily designed for an adult audience, with or without previous watercolor experience, although younger patrons are certainly welcome to attend as well!

Author Talk: Wayne G. Johnson: May 23

Wayne Johnson, a Minnesota native, is the author of "Whitey: From Farm Kid to Flying Tiger to Attorney." This is a memoir of his life beginning with growing up on a tenant farm during the great depression, fighting with the Flying Tigers during World War II, and finally settling down as a successful attorney. Come hear Johnson speak about his life and his book in person at the Two Harbors Public Library! We are honored to host such a distinguished speaker, and hope you will all show your encouragement by attending as well!

Nature in Story: May 20

Kids! Join the Gooseberry Falls State Park Naturalist, Carly Hawkinson, at the library. After reading through a children’s storybook, she will show and tell some fun and interesting nature items relating to the story. The program may also have a craft, game, or other hands-on learning experience.

This free program will be held in the multi-purpose room of the Two Harbors Public Library and is geared for kids, ages 5- 10.

Book Group: May 19

This month, the Two Harbors Public Library Book Group will be reading "Thy Father's Will: A historical novel based on the true story of a family forever altered by the damaging consequences of decisions made for all the right reasons" by Kirsten Jacobson Stasney.

Stasney is a Minnesota author, and this is her first novel. She was a guest author speaker at the Two Harbors Public Library last November, and the book group was impressed enough to add her book to their list.

Better yet, Stasney will be attending the book group meeting in person! It's not everyday we have the opportunity to discuss a book with its author; we're thrilled to host such an event!

Changing Lives, Changing World, Cultural Movie Showing: May 10

The Changing Lives, Changing World movie series involves watching a film from another culture each month and following it up with a discussion.

This month's film will be "Short Cut to Nirvana", a film by Maurizio Benazzo and Nick Day. According to the back of the DVD case:

"This enthralling documentary treks to the heart of the largest gathering of humanity on Earth: the Kumbh Mela. This huge festival has been held in India every 12 years for over two millennia, but is little known in the West - until now.
